One thing I like about November (besides the turkey and dressing!) is the opportunity to "spice" up lessons with the variety of Fall themes we can utilize this month - Apples, Pumpkins, Leaves, Pilgrims, Turkeys, etc.
A fun activity I have done with students is what I call "Going Hunting". Diecut various numbers of seasonal items (4 pumpkins, 6 turkeys, 7 apples, etc) and stick them up in groups around the room. Give students a pre-programmed recording sheet with fill-in-the-blank sentences. A word bank should be included at the bottom. Ex: There are ___ _____________ on the _________________. A completed sentence will look like this: There are 6 turkeys on the shelf.
I do this activity as part of my work stations. That way there are only a few students moving around the room at a time. It's called managing chaos!
They find and record their answers on the sheet. The last step is to tally all the diecuts found and record the total. My students LOVE this activity. It targets following directions, counting, word recognition, vocabulary, and addition.
